Full Professor of the History of Economic Thought at the University of Pisa since 1983, I was visiting fellow at the University of Birmingham, 1972; at S. Antony's College, Oxford, 1973; and at Cambridge University, 1988. I was keynote speaker at the Annual Conference of the Australian History of Economics Association, Perth, 2004.
I was member of the steering committee of the European Society for the History of Economic Thought (ESHET), 1992-1996. Member of the ESHET Council, 1996-2001. Vice-president of the Council, 2000-2001.
My main research interests are concentrated on nineteenth and twentieth century Italian economic thought, with particular emphasis on the relationship between economics and institution and between economic theory and policy. The main fruit of this interest is the biography I dedicated to Luigi Einaudi (Turin 1986), followed by a collection of papers by Einaudi translated in English and edited together with Luca Einaudi and R. Marchionatti (London 2006). I have also provided a biography of the Risorgimento economist Francesco Ferrara (Palermo 1995), and a general history of Italian economics from the Sixteenth century to the present days (Turin 2000; forthcoming edition in English).
Apart from Italian economics, another interest I cultivated regards classical economics and Marx. Beyond a book in Italian, I provided an entry on the same subject for the ElgarCompanion to Classical Economists, edited by N. Salvadori and H. K. Kurz in 1998.
